Chapter 971: Calculating Scholar 26
After washing her face to cool down, Tang Wan felt much more refreshed. Ye Qingtong had been watching her the entire time, and as soon as she finished, he quickly said, “Come inside and sit. Mother has already prepared the meal.”
“Mm,” Tang Wan replied, nodding shyly.
Not long after, Father Ye and Mother Ye brought the dishes to the table. In high spirits, Father Ye even took out a jar of wine he had saved for over half a year and began drinking with Ye Qingtong.
Worried that Tang Wan might feel shy and not eat properly, Ye Qingtong kept placing food into her bowl. “Try this rabbit meat,” he said. “I caught it in the mountains myself. The meat is very tender.”
Tang Wan smiled and nodded. “Alright.” She took a bite, and under the eager gazes of Father and Mother Ye, she nodded again. “It’s delicious! Auntie, your cooking is wonderful!”
“It’s nothing special,” Mother Ye said with a pleased smile. “As long as you like it.” Then she added more food to Tang Wan’s bowl. “Eat more. From now on, we’re family—you don’t need to be so reserved.”
“What Auntie says is right,” Tang Wan replied with a gentle smile.
After the meal, Father Ye and Mother Ye prepared to head out to work. Before leaving, Mother Ye instructed, “Qingtong, go pick a watermelon from your Third Uncle’s house and chill it in the well. It’s hot today—Wan Wan shouldn’t suffer from the heat.”
“I understand, Mother,” Ye Qingtong said.
Once they left, he turned to Tang Wan and looked at her for a moment before saying, “Wan Wan, you can rest inside. I’ll go out for a bit.”
“I’ll go with you,” Tang Wan said quickly.
Hearing this, Ye Qingtong glanced at the blazing sun outside and shook his head. “No, it’s too hot. It wouldn’t be good if you got sunburned.”
Though he did want to take her along—just to show others how beautiful his future wife was—the thought of her delicate skin being exposed to the harsh sun made him hesitate.
“But… if I stay alone in your house, isn’t that inappropriate?” Tang Wan asked softly.
Ye Qingtong immediately smiled. “What’s inappropriate about it? We’re getting married next month anyway.”
As soon as the word “married” was spoken, their eyes met. Both of them flushed at the same time.
Seeing this, Tang Wan couldn’t help but laugh inwardly.
So this is how Tong Tong looks now? So shy and awkward… where did that scheming side go?
Ye Qingtong gave a light cough, then said, “I’ll be back soon—half an hour at most. Just sit inside and rest.”
“Alright. Then go and come back quickly,” Tang Wan said.
“Okay.” Ye Qingtong nodded, grabbed a straw hat, and hurried toward his Third Uncle’s house.
Seeing him arrive in such a rush, Third Uncle Ye couldn’t help but say, “Qingtong, what brings you here in this heat? Come, have some watermelon—I just pulled it out of the well water. It’s nice and cool.”
In the summer, well water stayed refreshingly cold—perfect for chilling watermelon.
“You came at just the right time,” Third Uncle added.
Hearing this, Ye Qingtong said, “Third Uncle, do you have any whole chilled watermelons left? My… future wife is at my house. Mother asked me to bring one back for her to cool down.”
At those words, Third Uncle Ye’s eyes lit up. “You’ve got yourself a wife already? Which girl?”
Was this boy finally getting married?
