Chapter 968: Calculating Scholar 23

Li Fuze was no fool—he immediately understood the underlying meaning in Ye Qingtong’s words. His expression darkened further, but he didn’t argue with him directly. Instead, he turned to Tang Wan, his face filled with disappointment. “Wan Wan, our family has watched you grow up. Marriage is such an important matter—why didn’t you tell us? I could have asked my parents to help you take a look.”

At those words, Mother Ye’s expression sank slightly.

There was something very pointed in what he said. Tang Wan wasn’t part of the Li family—who she chose to marry had nothing to do with them. Since when did she need their approval?

Before either Ye Qingtong or Tang Wan could respond, Mother Ye spoke first. “Li Xiucai can rest assured. While our Ye family may not be wealthy, our reputation is certainly respectable. This marriage has been arranged properly through a matchmaker. There’s no need for you to worry.”

Li Fuze felt a surge of frustration.

He hadn’t even been asking her—why was she answering?

At that moment, Tang Wan also spoke calmly. “I know Brother Afu is concerned about me, but Tong Tong has saved me twice. He is definitely a good man. If I marry him, both you and Uncle and Auntie can be at ease.”

Li Fuze fell silent.

Who cared whether you got married or not?

Once she was gone, where would he find another beauty like her—someone who could be used to secure money?

But in front of the Ye family, he couldn’t say any of that. He could only force a smile. “As long as you’re happy, I wish you the best.”

“Thank you, Brother Afu,” Tang Wan replied immediately.

With nothing left to say, Li Fuze could only leave the Tang household with a dark expression.

Meanwhile, Ye Qingtong’s attention was entirely captured by one thing—the way she had called him “Tong Tong.” His eyes lit up instantly, as if glowing.

As soon as Li Fuze left, he turned to Tang Wan, his voice firm and sincere. “Wan Wan, don’t worry. I promise you won’t regret marrying me.”

Tang Wan lowered her head shyly, her cheeks flushing. “Mm…”

Seeing this, Mother Ye couldn’t help but roll her eyes at her son.

I’m still standing right here, and he’s already acting like this?

She had thought her son was steady and reserved, but now? The moment he met a pretty girl, all that composure disappeared.

Men were all the same.

Still, as long as he could bring a daughter-in-law home, nothing else mattered.

Because Tang Wan’s kitchen had been burned earlier, Ye Qingtong and Mother Ye didn’t stay for lunch. Instead, Mother Ye said warmly, “Girl, why don’t you come to our house to eat? Now that the marriage is settled, there’s no need to feel shy. It’s perfectly proper for you to come.”

Hearing this, Ye Qingtong immediately looked at Tang Wan with clear anticipation.

Tang Wan hesitated slightly. “But… wouldn’t that be inappropriate?”

“What’s inappropriate about it?” Mother Ye replied at once. Just by looking at her son’s expression, she knew he couldn’t wait to bring Tang Wan home. As his mother, how could she not help him along?

Ye Qingtong also nodded eagerly. “Mother’s right. We’re already engaged. We could even be married as soon as next month. Coming over for a meal now is completely normal.”
