Chapter 1009: Doomsday Big Boss 13
After scanning the store, Tang Wan quickly made her choice. “This one,” she said, pointing to a split bed frame. “It’s easier to carry. And grab a few more mattresses while you’re at it. They’re light enough—everyone can take one back.”
Hu Tongxia nodded without hesitation. “Alright.”
He immediately began bundling the bed boards neatly and carrying them out to the truck. The others followed suit, hauling stacks of mattresses and loading them in.
Just as they were nearly done, a zombie suddenly clambered up from the side of the truck and lunged toward Hu Tongxia, who was standing beside it.
Tang Wan’s heart skipped. “Watch out!”
At the same time, she swiftly activated her ability, sending a vine lashing toward the zombie.
In truth, Hu Tongxia had already sensed something approaching from behind. He was just about to kick it away—but he hadn’t expected Tang Wan to warn him, much less step in to help.
That alone caught him off guard.
With a sharp kick, he sent the zombie tumbling off the truck.
Then he turned to Tang Wan, his eyes noticeably brighter. “Thanks. Good thing you noticed in time—otherwise I’d have been in trouble.”
Tang Wan kept a straight face. “It’s nothing. We’re short on time. Let’s head back.”
“Right!” Hu Tongxia nodded immediately, an inexplicable sense of satisfaction settling in his chest.
Soon, everyone climbed back into the truck and drove toward the base.
By the time they arrived, it was already close to five o’clock.
After getting down, Tang Wan turned to Hu Tongxia. “Thanks for helping move everything. I’ll go roast the pigeon now. Let’s eat together tonight.”
Hearing this, Hu Tongxia couldn’t help muttering, “Aren’t those our pigeons? Why are we inviting them too?”
He had been looking forward to eating with her alone.
Tang Wan glanced at him and said calmly, “They risked their lives to help move the bed. It’s only right to treat them. If you mind, I can send your share to your room.”
Hu Tongxia immediately shook his head. “No need. I’ll eat with you.”
Still, he couldn’t hide a trace of disappointment.
He had thought this would be a chance to spend time with her alone.
…
After Tang Wan left, Hu Tongxia’s eyes flickered.
The next moment, he stepped forward and slung an arm over one of the ability users’ shoulders.
“Brothers,” he said in a lowered voice, “you all know Wan Wan and I had some misunderstandings before. I want to take this chance to clear things up with her… privately. But she insists on inviting you all to dinner. So—could you guys find an excuse not to come?”
Inwardly, he was already thinking—if they didn’t show up, it wouldn’t be his fault.
The few men exchanged looks, then broke into knowing smiles.
“Well, well. Didn’t expect this from you, Old Hu,” one of them laughed. “If you like someone, just say it. You’re not a kid anymore. Picking fights to get attention? That’s outdated.”
“Exactly! No wonder you were always arguing with Tang Wan. So it was on purpose!”
“Don’t worry,” another added, clapping him on the shoulder. “We’ve got you covered tonight. We’ll stay out of your way.”
“Yeah, yeah—good luck! Hope you succeed and get out of singlehood soon!”
The group laughed, each giving him a friendly pat as they dispersed.
