Chapter 728: The Dark Sentinel 39

The moment Tang Wan’s mental body arrived, the snow-white Persian cat leapt forward without hesitation, its claws flashing as it struck the massive black python entangling the white tiger. With a sharp cry, it clawed fiercely at the python’s eyes, its movements swift and precise, forcing the monstrous creature into retreat.

Blinded and thrown into chaos, the python let out a furious roar, its body writhing violently. At the same time, the Persian cat let out a clear, urgent call toward the white tiger, instantly snapping Lu Tong’s awareness back into focus.

In the next instant, his perception withdrew sharply, pulling back hundreds of meters in a single movement.

The battlefield shifted again.

The enemy had truly gone all out this time. Even at the cost of sacrificing such a powerful sentinel, they had intended to drag Lu Tong down with them.

When the heavily modified 3S level sentinel realized Lu Tong had escaped, he used his final breath to reveal their exact location.

“They are at…”

Before he could finish, his life ended.

His body, pushed far beyond its limits by forced enhancement, had already reached its breaking point.

The coordinates were enough.

The enemy commander reacted immediately, issuing orders without hesitation. “All units, fire on target coordinate X…”

The command was followed by a storm.

Bullets, artillery, and countless high-energy weapons tore through the air, all converging toward Tang Wan and Lu Tong’s position.

Tang Wan’s teeth clenched as anger surged through her. This was no longer just a battlefield clash between nations. It was a coordinated attempt to eliminate them specifically.

Were they really planning to bury them under sheer firepower?

Before she could think further, Lu Tong had already pulled her down, rolling across the ground as explosions erupted around them.

The bunker they had occupied was obliterated instantly, reduced to fragments in a single blast.

But the attack did not stop there.

Wave after wave of bombardment followed, leaving no room to breathe, no space to escape.

Lu Tong continued to move, shielding Tang Wan as he dodged relentlessly, but gradually, the situation tightened.

There was nowhere left to run.

He realized it at the same time she did.

In the end, he stopped.

His mental body surged outward, bracing against the surrounding explosions, buying what little time he could. At the same moment, he pulled Tang Wan tightly into his arms, holding her as if that alone could protect her from everything.

“Wanwan… I’m sorry,” he said quietly, his voice carrying a rare trace of regret. “I dragged you into this.”

She didn’t have to die here.

But Tang Wan shook her head immediately, her voice steady despite everything. “What are you apologizing for? Being able to live and die with you… that’s also a kind of happiness.”

Her words had barely fallen when a far more violent explosion tore through the battlefield.

The force swallowed them completely.

Even so, Lu Tong did not let go.

Their bodies hit the ground together.

In those final moments, Tang Wan no longer cared about anything else. Not the battlefield, not the war, not even her own life.

There was only one question left in her mind.

“Tongtong… who are you?” she asked, her consciousness fading, her vision already blurred. Though she could no longer see him clearly, their spiritual connection still held.

Lu Tong’s voice came softly through that connection.

“I am your Tongtong…”

Tang Wan almost wanted to curse.

Of course she knew that.

That wasn’t what she meant.

Before she could press further, his voice came again, quieter this time, yet filled with something deeper.

“Wanwan… I’ve been waiting for you… waiting for the day you wake up… and fall in love with me. Do you think… I can keep waiting?”

Her thoughts froze for a moment.

But before she could respond, before she could ask anything more, everything went white.

When her awareness returned, she was already back in the familiar blank space.

Frustration hit her immediately.

“So close… just a little more and I would have understood!” she muttered, her tone filled with irritation. “What is going on with Tongtong this time? Would it kill him to just tell me properly?”

Little Cutie spoke carefully from the side, his voice unusually cautious. “Host… maybe there are restrictions on his side. He might not be able to reveal certain things directly.”

Even as he spoke, he felt uneasy.

Because just moments ago, the main system had issued a direct alert, instructing him to closely monitor Tang Wan’s condition and report any abnormalities immediately.

But looking at her now, aside from her obvious frustration, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

Still… something about this situation felt far from simple,
