Chapter 698: The Dark Sentinel 9
Seeing the seriousness in Tang Wan’s expression, Lu Tong remained unmoved. His tone was calm, almost indifferent, as he replied directly, “I don’t need a guide to act with me. You should know that I am a dark sentinel.”
Tang Wan did not back down in the slightest. She lifted her chin slightly and met his gaze without hesitation. “I don’t care what kind of sentinel you are. I only know that you are my sentinel now. Since I am your guide, I should stay by your side at all times. Only then can I feel at ease.”
Her voice carried a firmness that left no room for negotiation.
In her mind, she could not help but scoff. If they were not together, how were they supposed to build any kind of connection? Was she expected to rely purely on their mental link? That kind of distance was not something she was willing to accept.
At that moment, Lu Tong’s communicator suddenly rang. A faint light flickered before a virtual screen appeared in front of him, revealing the face of a high-ranking official from the White Tower. The man’s expression was sharp, but there was an unmistakable trace of excitement in his eyes.
“Lu Tong,” he said without preamble, “I’ve heard that you’ve found a guide with one hundred percent compatibility?”
Lu Tong responded lazily, his tone as indifferent as ever. “Yeah.”
The official’s eyes brightened instantly. Without bothering to hide his eagerness, he spoke in a commanding tone, “Bring her to the examination room immediately.”
“I know,” Lu Tong replied curtly.
His eyes remained cold as he ended the communication without another word. Then he turned his attention back to Tang Wan, his gaze sweeping over her briefly before asking, “Are you feeling better?”
Tang Wan nodded. “I’m fine now.”
Lu Tong gave a short acknowledgment. “Then let’s go.”
With that, he stood up, his movements decisive and unhesitating.
At the same time, Little Cutie’s voice sounded in Tang Wan’s mind, carrying a hint of urgency. “Host, this world’s additional mission is to prevent the villain, Lu Tong, from destroying the White Tower and causing the deaths of tens of thousands of sentinels.”
Tang Wan’s expression did not change, but she responded calmly in her mind, “Got it.”
In the original plot, Lu Tong had once been subjected to a secret experiment within the White Tower. That single incident had pushed him beyond his limits. Once he lost control, the consequences were catastrophic. In his fury, he destroyed the White Tower itself.
For sentinels without guides, the White Tower was not just a building. It was their sanctuary, the only place where their overactive senses could be soothed and their minds stabilized. Without it, the overwhelming flood of external stimuli would shatter their control, leaving them vulnerable to complete mental collapse.
That was exactly what had happened.
Countless sentinels, unable to withstand the sudden surge of noise and chaos, had lost control one after another. By the time guides managed to intervene and stabilize them, it was already too late for many.
In the end, Lu Tong had been blamed for everything.
Tang Wan could not help but let out a cold laugh at the thought.
If anyone truly bore responsibility, it was the so-called male lead, Ellivis. He had deliberately chosen the White Tower as the location for his experiment, fully aware of the risks. Even more unforgivable was the fact that his guide, Zheng Wenjun, possessed the ability to calm Lu Tong’s condition. Yet at the critical moment, Ellivis had refused to let Zheng Wenjun intervene.
His possessiveness had outweighed all reason.
He had known the consequences and still chosen to stand by.
And in the end, all the blame had been pushed onto Lu Tong alone.
How convenient.
Tang Wan’s eyes darkened slightly, a trace of cold intent flashing through them. If she ever had the chance, she would not let that man off so easily. After all, she still had other methods at her disposal.
Soon, the two of them arrived at the examination room.
Several high-ranking members of the White Tower were already present, along with a group of researchers dressed in white coats. The moment Tang Wan entered, their gazes locked onto her with undisguised curiosity and anticipation.
One of the inspectors stepped forward, his tone eager but controlled. “Tang Wan, correct? Please, have a seat. We will be testing your mental strength and compatibility. There’s no need to feel nervous.”
Tang Wan gave a slight nod and sat down calmly. In truth, she was also curious. After so many worlds, just how far had her mental strength grown?
Before long, a researcher brought over a metallic helmet and carefully placed it on her head.
“Now,” the inspector instructed, his eyes fixed on the data panel beside him, “focus your mind and direct your mental power toward the induction points on the helmet. Try to attack them.”
Tang Wan closed her eyes slightly, gathering her thoughts.
Then, without hesitation, she released her mental power.
