Chapter 1477: Her Highness the Princess (23)
Tang Guo led the Emperor and Yun Buxiu to the place where the potatoes had been planted.
With their own eyes, they watched as round, plump potatoes were dug out of the earth. Beneath a single plant were so many tubers that the yield was astonishingly high.
“What is this called? And how is it eaten?” The Emperor immediately asked the most important question.
“This is called a potato,” Tang Guo explained. “It was probably mixed in accidentally when my people brought back various crops. Later, it was planted by chance. Seeing its appearance reminded me of an unofficial historical record I once read, from which I learned its name and methods of preparation.”
“It can be steamed, boiled, stir-fried, mixed into dishes, or roasted.”
“Father Emperor, let us have potatoes for lunch today.”
The Emperor readily agreed. Even Yun Buxiu was fascinated by the round vegetables.
After finishing the potato feast, the Emperor discovered that roasted, steamed, and boiled potatoes were extremely filling. Even he only needed one or two to satisfy his hunger.
As for stir-fried shredded potatoes, they made an excellent side dish.
Once he learned of the crop’s yield and growth period, the Emperor was overjoyed. Forgetting all propriety, he immediately sent an imperial decree summoning his ministers.
Tang Guo then handed the three mu of potato fields over to the Emperor.
Now that potatoes had been introduced, it was up to the Emperor to spread their cultivation among the people.
Tang Guo was preparing to return to the Princess Manor when the Emperor quickly stopped her.
“Guo’er, stay a while longer. I still have many questions.”
“Father Emperor, there are experienced farmers here who are specially responsible for cultivating potatoes. They understand the crop far better than your daughter does after these past months. I must return to continue researching other crops. I do not wish to waste even a moment.”
In truth, the sun was simply too hot, and she had no desire to stay under it.
The system laughed. Host is such a rascal.
Looking at the ministers around them, who were filled with admiration, the system was speechless.
Well, perhaps this was insignificant to the Host, but to them, it was extraordinary.
In the ministers’ eyes, the Eldest Princess was devoted to the people and sought no glory.
It was clearly because of her that this precious, high-yield crop had appeared, yet she had given all the credit for cultivation to the old farmers.
And now, despite the blazing sun, she was already hurrying back to study other crops.
Such a princess was someone they could never hope to compare with.
Tang Guo departed beneath the respectful gazes of countless ministers.
From this day onward, her position in Northern Xia was no longer what it had once been.
No one would regard her merely as a princess.
In short, she had attained a unique status in this kingdom and possessed tremendous freedom.
She had done all this for three reasons.
First, to achieve complete freedom within Northern Xia.
Second, since she had come to this world and found that her parents and elder brother were all good people who stood at the pinnacle of this nation, she hoped this world would become better and better.
Third, to prepare for leaving the capital several years later whenever she pleased.
Why leave the capital?
Because Lu Qing had yet to receive his punishment.
Why not simply kill him now?
Because death would be too merciful.
What she intended to do was rescue Lin Yuexiang.
At the same time, she would obtain proof that Lu Qing had sent people to murder Lin Yuexiang and her two children.
And she would personally raise Lu Qing’s son, Lu Yufan, grooming him into one of Crown Prince Tang Zhi’s most capable assistants.
