Chapter 1285: The Fool’s Daughter (64)
“So that was her plan all along—drive me away so Yuyu could move her household registration in and eventually get a share of the compensation money and the house. In her eyes, are only my elder sister and younger brother her real children?”
Tang Lide remained silent, not knowing how to comfort her.
Song Jinghua continued venting, saying over and over that throughout all these years, she had never forgotten to help her natal family, yet none of them had ever truly regarded her as one of their own.
Now, abandoned and with nowhere to turn, she didn't even have a roof over her head. The relatives she had once treated with all her heart had turned out to be so cold and heartless, unwilling to lend her even the slightest help.
Old Madam Song had even gone so far as to accuse her of wanting to live off her elderly mother.
But over the years, had she ever brought too little money back to her family?
Leaving aside the larger sums and the loans, just the bits and pieces Old Madam Song, her elder sister, and her younger brother had taken from her over the years added up to at least one or two hundred thousand yuan.
She had truly thrown her sincerity to the dogs.
How had she ended up like this? Hadn't she treated them well enough?
Two people sharing the same misery sat huddled together on the icy bench in the park. The wind around them seeped straight into their hearts. They stared blankly at the riverside as the sky gradually darkened, neither of them moving an inch.
The little money they had left wasn't enough, and they didn't dare spend it on outrageously expensive hotels.
When the cold became unbearable, they dug out their thick winter clothes and wrapped themselves up, finally feeling a bit warmer.
They fell asleep just like that.
When they woke up the next morning, they discovered some of their luggage was gone. They guessed that while they had been sleeping, nearby beggars had stolen it.
What did it feel like to be completely driven into a corner?
Even during all those years they had spent drifting through life, they had never been reduced to such a miserable state.
Today, they had finally experienced it.
It was a feeling steeped in utter despair.
Every day, Tang Guo watched everything through the System's screen. The two seemed to have decided to make the park their temporary home and had even set up a makeshift shelter nearby.
During the day, Tang Lide went to work while Song Jinghua collected recyclables around the area. She wore a hat and covered her face, afraid of being recognized by people she knew.
They believed that if they could just endure until the fifteenth of next month, when Tang Lide received his salary, everything would be fine.
But one day, Song Jinghua received a call from one of Tang Lide's coworkers, informing her that he had been rushed to the hospital.
Tang Lide had fallen ill.
It wasn't a serious disease, merely a condition similar to Song Jinghua's. From now on, he could no longer overwork himself. Fortunately, the company had covered the medical expenses.
Tang Lide was only a few years away from retirement, but in his current condition, there was no way he could continue working. He had no choice but to leave his position. Although he received everything he was entitled to, from that point onward, they truly had no source of income.
Unless they could survive until the day their pensions began.
Relying on the little money they had left, the couple settled down in the park.
During that time, both of them called their relatives to borrow money, but naturally, no one was willing to lend them any.
They had completely given up on these so-called relatives and no longer held any expectations.
Two educated people had ended up scavenging for recyclables in the park to survive. After struggling on like this for roughly a month, the money in their hands was finally no longer enough to sustain them.
Moreover, neither of them dared to do overly strenuous work. Living exposed to the elements and surviving on whatever food they could find only made their health deteriorate further.
Both of them thought they were going to freeze to death in the park.
As for their daughter, Tang Guo, they no longer had the face to ask her for anything.
Looking back now, the person they had wronged the most was actually their own biological daughter.
But...
Was there any use regretting it now?
