Chapter 1224: The Fool's Daughter (3)
“If you two hadn't spent all these years giving away things from our house and handing money out to everyone, we'd probably own three houses by now.”
Their expressions immediately darkened. Tang Lide frowned and said, “What's wrong with helping our own family? Forget houses—are houses more important than family? Ever since you started working, you've become obsessed with money. You're selfish and only think about yourself.”
System: Holy shit, what kind of logic is this?
Tang Guo couldn't be bothered arguing any further. No matter how much she said to these two, it would be meaningless.
Thinking about what might happen next month, she chuckled softly and called her aunt, Liu Chunyue.
After a few rings, the call connected. Liu Chunyue's voice was exceptionally warm. “Xiaoguo? Have you eaten yet?”
“Just finished,” Tang Guo replied. “Auntie, Mom told me you came over today because you wanted to borrow my car?”
“That's right. Your mother told you?” Liu Chunyue sighed. “It's just that our family really doesn't have enough money circulating right now. Otherwise, we'd have bought your cousin a brand-new car ourselves. Why would we trouble you?”
“We've worried ourselves sick over finding a wife for Zhiming. He finally managed to get himself a girlfriend, and things are already getting serious. The girl said she absolutely wants to go on a road trip with him before anything else.”
“She even said that if you want to know what kind of man someone really is, you have to travel with him once. Zhiming's car is already so old. How could he possibly take a girl out on a road trip in that little junker? What if it breaks down halfway? How embarrassing would that be?”
“Auntie thought that since we're family, Xiaoguo definitely wouldn't refuse to help your cousin with something as important as his marriage, right?” Without even waiting for Tang Guo's answer, Liu Chunyue continued, “So Auntie will thank you in advance. Another day, I'll bring you something nice to eat and have your cousin treat you to a meal. How about that?”
Tang Guo curled her lips slightly. “Auntie, this is a new car. I only bought it two months ago.”
“Xiaoguo, don't worry. Zhiming will definitely treasure it and won't damage your new car.”
System: Incredible. Her shamelessness is on another level.
“Auntie, honestly, I think road trips aren't very safe. Why not just book a tour group? It's easy and comfortable. The guide arranges everything, so you don't need to worry about anything. Safe and relaxing.”
Liu Chunyue immediately replied, “Zhiming said joining a tour group isn't fun. Group tours are restrictive, and they're all old men and old women. There wouldn't be anything to talk about with a young girl. A road trip is much better—you can go wherever you want.”
“And these days, tour groups are full of scams. They're always making people buy things. Not only would they have a miserable time, but they'd also waste a fortune. It's not worth it.”
“Besides, the girl wants to see how responsible our Zhiming is. If everything is handled by the tour guide, then what would he be doing? What if they spend all that money and still fail to work out? Wouldn't that be losing on both ends?”
Tang Guo continued, “In that case, Auntie, could you ask Cousin to come over and speak with me directly?”
“Sure. Tomorrow—tomorrow's the weekend anyway. How about that?”
“Okay. Tomorrow afternoon, after lunch.”
After hanging up, Tang Guo casually informed Tang Lide and Song Jinghua before returning to her room.
System finally couldn't hold it in anymore.
【Host, this time we're surrounded by scummy people. What are you planning to do? These kinds of people don't listen to reason at all. All those heartfelt schemes you've used before are completely useless against thick-skinned people like them.】
✦ Translator's Note
Okay, I'm just going to say it now: this is probably one of my least favorite arcs. ๐ญ
And no, it's not because it's badly written. Quite the opposite, actually.
It's because the author did too good of a job depicting a certain kind of situation that is just... way too close to reality.
I was reading this and genuinely found myself grinding my teeth like, “OH MY GOD, PLEASE STOP. I JUST WANT TO BASH MY HEAD AGAINST THE TABLE.” ๐ญ
Did you see how they behaved JUST WITHIN THESE THREE CHAPTER? UGH *Flips tables*
There were definitely moments where I was sitting here thinking, Tang Guo, please. Just... do something. Anything. Go absolutely feral NOW. Break the pot! I'm begging you. ๐
This arc just hits a particularly frustrating nerve because unfortunately, parents/family like this do exist in real life, and there are people who end up feeling completely helpless because of situations like this.
So yeah. Not my favorite arc—not because the author did anything wrong, but because she did it TOO well. Ugh. ๐ญ
And honestly, I desperately wanted this arc to turn into the revenge fantasy my poor soul was craving. Whether Tang Guo gives me that satisfaction or not....? ๐
I'll save the rest of my rant until we reach the end of the arc. ๐
